If you are paying someone with an inactive account, you can only cancel a Venmo payment.
If you pay the wrong person or pay the wrong amount, you will not be able to cancel a Venmo payment. However, you can request a refund.

How to Cancel a Venmo Payment
1. Open the Venmo app on your device.
2. Click the button on the three horizontal lines. If your message or payment is not complete, you will see a small red dot.
3. Click the Incomplete options menu to view outstanding payments. It is represented by a red circle (“message” means that you received a payment request from a friend).
4. On the unfinished page, you will see two tabs: Order and Payment. Click the Check Out button.
5. Payment will be displayed. Message and amount sent (including phone number and email address) if you haven’t created an account yet. You can click “Back” next to the payment.
6. Tap to gray out the payment and send a text message. When I return to the Venmo homepage or open the app again, the message “This order has been canceled” appears. Payments will be lost and funds sent to inactive customers will not be debited from the linked bank account.
If You Accidentally Pay a Friend Twice (or if you pay twice)
1. In the app, tap Pay or Request.
2. Enter the recipient’s username, email address, or phone number.
3. Enter the payment amount.
4. Include a request for a refund of the incorrectly received amount.
5. Click Request.
How Do I Cancel a Venmo Payment if I Pay the Wrong Person?
1. If you are unable to cancel the payment paid to the recipient, open the Venmo app. However, you can request a refund from the other party.
2. Click the send/request icon in the lower right corner of the program. A blue circle with a dollar sign and a pencil.
3. Find the person who sent money by mistake. Start typing a person’s name until that person’s name appears in the search results.
4. Click the person’s name in the search results. The “Payment or Order” screen opens.
5. Enter the amount next to the dollar sign. The amount you enter here must match the amount you paid for this person.
6. Write a short message in the “What happened?” That you want to pay in the wrong way and get your money back as soon as possible.

8. Click “Confirm Order” and Venmo will send a request notification to your mobile phone. To view this transaction, click the transaction menu and select Incomplete before the order arrives.

Once your order has been received, the amount sent will be credited to your Venmo balance.
9. Send a notification if you have not paid for more than a day. You can send notifications to their mobile phones.

How Do I Cancel a Venmo Payment if I Am Making a Payment to Someone Who Does Not Have a Venmo Account?
1. Open the Venmo app.
2. Click on this icon. This is the menu icon that appears in the upper left corner of the app.
3. Select Incomplete. There are two tabs, Order and Payment.
4. Click on Payment to see the affected lot. Please note that if your phone number or address is not associated with a Venmo customer, you can void your payment. Here’s how to check:
If the phone number or address you submitted is not a Venmo user, you will see your email or phone number at the top of your order. A cancel button is displayed.
If your address or phone number is associated with your Venmo account, that person’s name will be displayed on the screen. If you are not the intended buyer, check to see if you paid the wrong person.
5. Click Cancel in the Payment section. The item will be removed from the list and returned to the sender’s card or account. The principal of the deposit is reflected in a business day of the fund.
